Let’s sing the gospel!

I was out washing the car one sunny morning. VBS was coming up in a month and I had been asked to teach the songs.

“Of all the verses in the Bible,” I thought, “children need to sing John 3:16. Some of these kids at VBS are just like I was at their age...lost. If they go home singing John 3:16, they’ll go home singing the gospel.”

I had grown up in the first generation of TV kids, and I could still remember those advertisement jingles—from Pepsodent toothpaste to Campbell soup to Doublemint gum. Since I had come to know Christ as a teenager and was a first generation Christian parent, I was passionate about giving my kids the opportunity to have their minds filled with things that matter. It was so clear to me that if those jingles could stick in my mind years later, couldn’t God’s Word do the same?

When I heard and understood John 3:16 for the first time at age 16, it changed my life. “Nicodemus” has become one of my favorite songs because John 3:16 still means so much to me today.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
